Stupid Wizards of the Coast...How many times do you have to invest in the library of books that you need to run a game? I suppose that I'd have to buy all new Monster Manuals I-IV? Stupid Wizards of the Coast...

Nope, haven't tried D&D 4.0 yet. I'm sure I will at some point, most likely when they come out with the intro box set, so I can get a taste for how the game plays without shelling out ~$100 for core books, and then running the risk of not liking it much.

i am curious to see the online aspect of the game and see how that will be integrated into the table top game. if it is like a video game then WoTC has made a huge mistake. if it resources online for table top gamers to use than WoTC is genius.

Bizarrely enough, almost the next day after my previous post I had a chance to play a demo game of D&D 4.0 (even though the books just say Dungeons & Dragons, with no hint that there ever was a previous edition at all). I found that the game itself was fun, but didn't really feel like the D&D I knew. All of the classes had at will powers that they could use all the time (even the wizard), and they all had powers that could be used once per encounter. My mage character still had a spell that could only be cast once per day, but it just felt like a different type of character, like a Sorcerer/Magic-User hybrid that never ran out of magic missiles.

There is definite power creep, but it seems to run both ways, with both characters and monsters being tougher from the get go.

So, bottom line, a fun game that probably won't be your cup of tea if you aren't into the Warcraft style of constantly increasing kewl powerz. Still, this is probably the right kind of game to reach the younger crowd, and I would have no problems playing it; it's just not the kind of game I'm likely to run of my own volition.

Well, I'll say this, they managed to make it accessible to people who just want to be badass and kill stuff.

I'm not going to bitch about it, seeing as my blood pressure's too high already, but suffice it to say that I've already marked WotC down as another corporation that I'm not allowed to come within 500 meters of the premisis.

In my opinion, some changes from 1st edition were needed ("Do I roll higher or lower than my saving throw number?"), some weren't. Some changes from 2nd edition were needed (goodbye THAC0!), some weren't. I bit my lip and went ahead and bought 3rd edition (after MUCH complaining & bellyaching, LOUDLY to anyone who would listen), and it wasn't bad. I even got used to it, streamlined as it was with the d20 system. I flat out refused to buy any 3.5 stuff. "It's little stuff," I was told, so I kept playing 3.0. But this really takes it too far. So, if anyone is going to D&D with me as DM, we will be playing 3.0. It's good to try to get new players into the game, but we who have been playing for 25 years (oh, God, it's been that long!) are getting the shaft. I still have 1st edition books. Maybe they should have come up with a program for a discount for returning gamers...just turn in your old books and get $$ off the new ones. Yeah, like that would happen!

That is a heck of an idea! I wonder if WoTC thought of it?? With the vast majority of players playing for over ten years (Myself Included) they should have some sort of payback program. It would have shown a little loyalty to us long time D&D players.

We will be running a D&D 4.0 game at this Saturdays game day if anyone is interested in playing it.

When I was younger I always thought I needed the "new" edition. That is bunk. A game is a game, you either play it or you dont. After living thru 5 versions of D&D, 4 of Warhammer Fantasy and three Warhammer 40K I am pretty much thru with new editions, unless it is a new game. I never even played "3rd" edition D&D. Got the books, read thru the PHB and put them on the shelf. Nifty. I am more inclined these days to try to develop my own game, maybe using something as a base (d20, GURPS, whatever), but then twisting it to my own desires.
