Well, folks, I did it. I completed NaNoWriMo's 50,000 word requirement and am listed as one of their Winners!

The good news is that, after many a sacrificed lunch hour and the sacred Wednesday nights where Kurt graciously watched Sophia while I fled to write in the library plus the weekends where I wrote while Sophia napped and even the occasional nighttime writing stint with the wonderful ibook warming my lap in bed, I arrived at 50,000 words. I didn't use any of the standard word count padding cheats like replacing all your contractions with two words, or having characters that have some malady that makes them repeat themselves, or even force hyphenating words that could be spelled altogether. The bad news is the novel isn't finished - not even the first draft - and there is much more hard work ahead of me.

I hope that I can stick to it, as I've come so far. I estimate I have only three or four more scenes to write before being able to type, gloriously, THE END. For me, the main goal of signing up for NaNoWriMo was twofold, one reason was to jumpstart my writing which has, in the past few years, dwindled down to nothingness and the other to force myself to write a certain number of words every single day in order to form a habit of writing all the time. I'll need a couple more weeks of every day writing to really entrench the habit, I think, and I hope that the incoming holiday season doesn't interfere with that.

Thanks to everyone who was encouraging and supportive of my endeavor. I have the good fortune of not having any friends who were negative or disparaging : responses to my joining NaNoWrimo varied from positive and enthusiastic to lukewarm and non-commital, and I thank you all.

P.S. I'm awaiting accolades, praise and congratulatory gifts.
