Due to an hour long power outage at the location where the SlithyToves server lives, SlithyToves.ORG was down for most of the day yesterday. We are back now. Surprisingly, people seem to care about the whens and whys of the downtime, so if you are interested in the gory details, read on. - - - -
Sometime last week during a power blip, we noticed that the UPS that serves Trinity - known to the world at large as SlithyToves.ORG - (and our hub, router, cable modem, kvm, etc.) was showing an overload light whenever the power went out. This UPS is the oldest of ours, so it could be that we've overloaded it, that the batteries are on their last gasp or that we just need to get a newer, better UPS.
That said, we weren't ready when at 5ish AM on Monday morning we were woken by the loud insistend sounds of the UPS's notifying us of a power outage. Trinity inelegantly hacked up and shut down because of the overload, and the KVM wouldn't let us switch over to it anyhow, as it too had cut off.
Power was still out when Kurt left the house for work, and had come back by the time I was ready to leave. However, during our previous power blip experience, we noticed that Trinity had had to be manually fsck'd and I had no time right then to stop and do that. Thus the resulting 8 hours or so of downtime. We apologize for any inconvenience this caused and thank everyone for their concerned (desperate?) emails, ims, etc.
We'll be getting a new UPS or new batteries for trinity ASAP. (This is Schwind ASAP, which translates to a week or two).
