Firstly, if you haven't already seen it, you can read the first part of this story here.
Now we enter the 2nd part of the story. After calling the local courthouse to get the case number I called Progressive Insurance. The first thing they did was check that everyone involved in the accident was ok physically. - - - -
The insurance company took my information and told me that a field rep would call me back.
Now the damage was pretty minimal. I have a small dent and a bit of a scratch. I got a call back from the field rep and she asked me if I minded that they recorded the conversation. I said that that was fine. After a few boring questions about birthdays, social security numbers etc... they asked me to describe the accident, which I did. [see above link if you haven't seen it already.] The field rep then closed with "I'm going to call William W. (the other driver) and confirm and then we'll be rolling."
That sounded good to me so we parted ways with me expecting a call in the next 30 mins or so.
45 mins later I get a call from the rep.
Rep: Can we talk on Tuesday instead?
Me: Uh sure. Is everything ok? Is William ok?
Rep: Physically probably, mentally no.
Me: You could tell that from talking to him on the phone?
Rep: Oh yes. It seems he filed a claim on his insurance for a stolen vehicle. He doesn't recall the accident. He doesn't know why he's in the hospital and he doesn't know where his truck is. By the way, do you know what they did with his vehicle?
Me: The Ridgeland PD mentioned that they had a tow truck coming for it. So did it turn out he was diabetic after all? [side note: not because it was damaged, just because it was clear that they couldn't leave it in the apartment parking lot.]
Rep: No, he suffered a nervous breakdown. He had some bad news this week. Father died and mother was diagnosed with cancer within 24 hours of each other. So he just kind of 'shut down'.
Me: Well, I can certainly wait until tuesday. I hope he gets the help he needs.
Rep: Well, he's panicking about the car and he's a progressive member so I'm going to hunt that vehicle down for him to help ease his mind a bit. So I won't be able to get to you until Tuesday. I have to wait for the police report because he was in no condition to confirm the accident details.
Me: That's fine. I'll expect a call on Tuesday then.
And that's how it ended. The guy's mind is swiss cheese. He still doesn't know what's going on. I kind of feel sorry for him.
